The Fellowship was inaugurated in 2004 in memory of Jane Scally (1955-2002), a graduate from RMIT Interior Design. Jane was passionate about the role of travel in a designer's education. She believed that travel should offer a young designer riches that were unpredictable, not limited to the study of iconic buildings or renowned locations, but accepting that travel should open up the world in unforeseeable ways.
In keeping with this generous spirit, the Fellowship is awarded each year to a final year student in the Interior Design program in the School of Architecture + Design at RMIT, providing an opportunity for a young designer to travel outside Australia soon after completing their studies, and to visit and experience at first hand places, sites, buildings, interiors and practitioners in order to enhance their future practice as a designer.
The winner is selected by an international jury on the basis of a portfolio which communicates a portrait of the author as a young designer with a developed attitude to design and a demonstrable awareness of the potency of good design to enrich and enhance the joy of life.
