For me starting in RMIT’s Building Design (TAFE) was a great way to get a feel of the industry. What I learnt at TAFE has enabled me to work in the industry while I continue my studies in the Bachelor of Architectural Design. I’m not sure that I would be as capable of the work that I do if I hadn’t studied the Building Design course first.

My major project, completed in 2010 at RMIT, was a culmination of my time spent abroad and how this affected my grasp of architectural thought gained at RMIT. My project centred around a devastated community in New Orleans and engaged the design of public space to encourage participation in a recovery process. The project was awarded the Ann Butler Memorial Prize.

I chose RMIT for a few key reasons: It is actively engaged in the development of new, challenging and provocative architecture which isn’t focused on pleasing people, but is interested in stimulating discussion within the varied cultural circles of Melbourne (and Australia). It is also one of the few universities which chooses students based on portfolios, projects, and interviews; which from the very outset shows the department’s concern for selecting a committed and diverse range of students.
