The ability to sell research ideas and capabilities is an increasingly important aspect of a researcher’s toolkit. In order to provide a forum for the School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering’s research postgraduates to practise and to get feedback in this skill, the School recently ran a "3 minute" thesis competition.

With just one still PowerPoint slide and no more than three minutes in which to convey their research, fourteen SAMME students competed. The judging panel, which comprised of Professor Simon Watkins, Professor Sabu John, Associate Professor Cees Bil and Ms Lina Bubic, agreed that all presenters put in a great effort with some excellent graphics being displayed and the results were very close.

The panel agreed that all presenters put in a great effort and showed a professionalism and tact in the way they presented years of study compressed into 180 seconds.

Congratulations must go to the three SAMME finalists:

  • Ali Daliri – Patch Antenna Strain Sensor for wireless structural health monitoring
  • Ishan Roy Salam – Box Winged Aircraft
  • Sridhar Ravi – Influence of Turbulence on MAV airfoils and wings

These finalists will now go forward to the College and University finals and may win the chance to compete in the Australian-wide finals later this year.
