Smart Energy Capture using Piezoelectric Patches on Artificial leaves

Industry partner: FCST Pty Ltd.
Supervisors: Professor Sabu John and Professor Simon Watkins
Research involves:

  1. Aerodynamics (to optimise the leaf configuration for maximum piezo-patch strain, hence maximum energy output).
  2. Mechanics and design of light-weight materials.

Optimisation of self-healing repair systems in aerospace system

Supported by: BRT-A and Boeing.
Investigators: Prof. A. Mouritz and Prof. C Wang (RMIT) and Prof. D. Wu (Boeing)
Aims: To optimise biologically-inspired self-healing repair systems for aerospace composite structures. The architecture and spatial configuration of self-healing micro-vessels is critical to minimise the adverse effects of the self-repair system on composite structural properties. The effects of the shape, size and volume fraction of self-healing micro-vessels on the structural properties of aerospace composites.

Optimised flush repair for dissimilar composite material systems

Supported by: BRT-A and Boeing
Investigators: Prof. C Wang and Dr. A. Orifici (RMIT) and Prof. D. Wu and Mr. S. Georgiadis (Boeing)
Aims: To develop new flush repair concepts and validated design tools to assist in the design of this new type of repairs for dissimilar composite material.

Fibre-Sized Energy Generators and Storage in Multi-Functional Fabrics

Supported by: Fabrics and Composites Science and Technologies
Investigators: Prof. S. John, Prof. C Wang and A/Prof. L. Wang
Aims: To develop a wearable garment capable of generating and storing its own energy from natural human motion
