The Data Search, Analysis and Storage group produces state of the art algorithms and software for searching, storing, and analysing text, music, image and video data. We are particularly interested in efficiently processing large data sets such as the Human Genome and The Web. Many of our PhD graduates work for major search engine companies such as Google and Microsoft, and we regularly collaborate with these companies.
Our specific, current areas of research include data compression, text indexing, pattern search in text (for example, proteins and DNA or web pages), information discovery in medical data, and human interaction with search systems. Many of these ideas are implemented in our Open Source search engine, Zettair.
