Researchers are invited to propose ideas for focussed research discussion workshops. Workshops need to be proposed and led by researchers. Researchers who wish to propose a workshop are asked to send a short synopsis of the research topic, a list of the expertise needed and the names of those to be included to Caroline Northwood, Senior Manager, Research and Innovation Development so that the workshop can be organised and participants invited.
The workshops are expected to facilitate multidisciplinary approaches to topics, to bring together researchers from different schools who are engaged in research in the topic area, or a related and complementary area, to develop innovative and creative approaches to solving problems.
Friday 18 May, 10:00 am -11:30 am, Research Lounge, City campus, Bldg 28.5
Dr Noel Chambers, member of the Federal Government’s Advisory Council for Intellectual Property (ACIP) and Chair of the Council’s review into Collaborations between the Public and Private Sectors: The Role of Intellectual Property will speak about his experiences on relationships, behaviour, culture and expectations that engage and frighten researchers, students, administrators and potential industry collaborators.
Dr Chambers established his first company as a student (where he employed more than 70 seasonal staff) prior to completing his PhD in medicinal chemistry/pharmacology at the University of Sydney. His patented discoveries in type II diabetes led to a collaboration with Circadian Technologies which he led for a number of years and for which the Royal Australian Chemical Institute presented him with the Biota award for Medicinal Chemistry.
Noel then moved into industry as Head of R&D for a small Australian healthcare company with a natural product drug discovery program supported by product development, exports to more than 20 countries and FDA/TGA accredited GMP facilities. He then moved to a Business Development role at Promega Corporation where he was responsible for research collaborations, technology in-licensing and acted as the local technology scout.
Noel has since been the CEO and/or Director of a number of ASX listed and unlisted Biotechnology/Health companies where he has successfully completed IPOs, negotiated the spin-out of companies from Universities and a CRC, and established an exit strategy for an eHealth company now owned by one of Australia’s biggest health insurers.
In 2009, Noel shifted his focus towards engaging with the philanthropic sector to enable better support for research and innovation. From 2009 - 2012 he was the Director of Philanthropy with Research Australia and led the establishment of the DoHA supported Philanthropy initiative.
