Presented by Professor Peter Brooks, Director Australian Health Workforce Institute, University of Melbourne.
Health is the most rapidly expanding part of any State budget and will consume around 16-18% of GDP in Australia by 2020. This will be driven not only by ageing and chronic disease but by our ability to treat (at a cost) many of the conditions that current afflict human kind. Australia's health workers are aging. Without doctors, nurses, allied health professionals, paramedics and a host of others, health services cannot be provided to those who need them. The only way to address these issues is to look to developing new models of care, look at how we fund health care and develop a serious health promotion and illness prevention agenda.
