Safety Information
Theft prevention
Prevention is the anticipation, recognition and appraisal of a risk of theft and taking steps to reduce or remove that risk.
To let a prospective thief know you are security conscious, you can take the following action:
- Make property difficult to steal.
- Mark property with some kind of identification mark.
- Secure all valuables lying around in open areas which are unattended.
- Report all theft to Police and report all incidences involving theft to the administration office.

Fire/evacuation information
Fire orientation
Observe and familiarise yourself with the location of ALL FIRE EXITS and the FIRE EVACUATION ASSEMBLY AREA.
Fire drills
Fire drills are conducted to ensure you recognise and understand the following:
- the sound of your buildings fire alarm
- the emergency exits which you may not normally use
- the procedure for calling the Fire Brigade.
Learn where the other exits are – NOW!
If there is a FIRE sound the alarm.
If you discover or suspect a fire, immediately notify the Fire Warden at the administration office (telephone 20500 internal).
The premises are set with an active fire alarm system, which should give warning of a fire anywhere within the buildings.
If you spot a fire, alert the other occupants by knocking on doors and shouting as you leave.
EMERGENCY FIRE BRIGADE CONTACT
(000 or 0 000 internally)
What should I do upon hearing the Fire alarm?
The fire alarm will be sounded by a loud siren.
When you hear the alarm evacuate the building calmly and promptly, as follows:
- If safe, switch off any electrical equipment or fuel sources in your room.
- Close the windows and doors if it is safe to do so.
- Leave the building by the shortest route possible.
- Follow instructions by Fire Warden and Security who will work with Emergency Services upon their arrival.
- Proceed to the Assembly Area in front of building 605 (Art Studio).
- Do not cluster around doorways.
- Do not hinder the Fire Warden, Security Officers and Emergency Service personnel in carrying out their duties.
- Never enter a building when the alarm is sounding, and do not re-enter a building until you are advised that it is safe to do so.
Fighting the fire
- Learn how to identify and use fire extinguishers.
- Attempt to fight the fire ONLY if you are familiar with the use of extinguishers and the fire is small.
- Determine the type of fire and use the appropriate fire extinguisher.
- If heat or smoke become threatening, leave the building closing all windows and doors if safe to do so.
Leave the building
Summon any members of staff to assist in evacuation.
- Don’t go back into the building for any reason.
- Evacuate to assembly areas until emergency is over.
- If you get trapped:
- Keep the doors closed.
- Seal cracks and vents if smoke comes in. If you’re trapped in a room and there’s no smoke outside, open the windows from the top to let out the heat and smoke and from the bottom to let fresh air in.
- Signal for help.
- Hang an object at the window (a jacket, shirt, etc…) to attract the fire department’s attention.
- If there is a phone in the room, call the Fire Brigade and report that you are trapped. Be sure to give them your room number and location.
To Survive a Building Fire:
- Crawl low in smoke.
- If you get caught in smoke get down low and crawl. Cleaner, cooler air will be near the floor. Get down low and GO, GO, GO!
- Before opening any doors, feel the door with the back of your hand. If it is hot, don’t open the door. If it is cool, brace yourself against the door slightly, and if heat or heavy smoke is present, close the door and stay in the room.
- Go to the nearest exit or stairway.
- If the nearest exit is blocked by fire, heat or smoke, go to another exit.
- Total and immediate evacuation is safest.
- Only use a fire extinguisher if the fire is very small and you know how to do it safely. If you can’t put out the fire, leave immediately closing the door behind you. Make sure the fire brigade is called, even if you think the fire is out.
- If You Are On Fire:
- Stop, Drop and Roll
- If your clothes catch on fire, cover your face, stop, drop and roll, wherever you are. Rolling smothers the fire.
- Cool burns. Use cool tap water on burns, immediately. Don’t use ointments. If the skin is blistered, seek medical advice.
