10MMM and Your Say

The Your Say research study investigated the use of technology in the Hamilton region. The study reflected questions rural young people themselves wanted to know. The project, based on a survey, was youth centred and youth driven, and explored how young people use technology in a rural location,

It is part of the 10MMM project which is funded through VicHealth’s Young People, Technology and Social Relationships funding, and led by Western District Health Service.

The study was shaped strongly by the views of young people, who helped draft the research questions and design the surveys used in the study. The project was driven by a team of young people who already had an interest in technology and multi-media. This gives the research particular significance. It is not surprising therefore that the study revealed largely positive attitudes among the young towards their use of technology. One of the interesting findings showed that young people believe the ways they use technology does not harm their ties with family and friends.

Not unexpectedly, the study found that access to good quality internet connections was a problem in parts of the region but despite this, use of information and communication technology (ICT) by young people in the region was high.

The study asked young people how they would like government resources used in the area of technology, and there was a strong view that broadband access should be improved as a priority.

The study also found that a large number of young people want to leave the region (around 80%), yet, among these, many wish to return to the region later. This finding reflects a strong desire on the part of many young people to “see the world” while at the same time suggesting a generally positive attitude towards the region. A number of young people wish they could stay in the region, but recognise that work, study and other realities mean they will have to leave

YourSay is the first stage of the 10MMM Young People, Technology and Social Relationships research. The study’s findings so far suggest a number of further questions which will be explored in the project’s next stages. Overall the study’s findings are reassuring regarding young people’s access to technology in the Hamilton region. The next phase will consider more closely the theme of ‘hopes and dreams’ and ideas of well-being.
