This course in designed to give you a concise yet critical introduction to key aspects of the development of and international discourse on human rights, especially in the twentieth century. The course will involve a systematic and reflective inquiry into the development of a values-based human rights discourse framed by international law and United Nations covenants. You will engage in debates about the value of Acts or Charters of Human Rights in Australia and critically reflect on the arguments involved. Finally, you will be asked to think about what an applied human rights perspective means, focussing on the concept of a culture of human rights and the role played by education, policy advocacy and organisational leadership.

This course is a work-integrated learning based course. It is designed to assist you to understand and engage in the task of complex organisational transformation that favours human rights approach when working with clients, co-workers and fellow citizens. It will help you to understand complex theories and practices of policy development, implementation, evaluation and organizational change. You will be encouraged to critically evaluate various approaches to organisational change, professional development and transformative practice. It will assist you to refine your problem solving skills and to develop a deep understanding of new approaches to working with co-workers and clients. The course will involve describing and evaluating the impact of the Victorian Charter of Human Rights and Responsibilities on your workplace. You will then undertake an organisational change project, which gives effect to some aspect of the Charter of Human Rights and can be evaluated.
