RMIT’s Master of Landscape Architecture will equip you to deal with the complexities of the world that landscape architecture professionals are now facing in everyday practice, for example climate change and rapid urbanization. The two year program is designed to provide a range of opportunities to experience the process of design research.

Design projects undertaken sit at a contemporary, international level. The concept of ‘Internationalisation’ is introduced as a means of understanding the role and responsibilities of landscape architects at a global level and its precise application in local situations.

In order to be professionally accredited, you must complete the Master of Landscape Architecture.

Career outlook

As a Master of Landscape Architecture graduate you will be prepared for the professional practice of Landscape architecture. Working independently or as part of a large multidisciplinary team, landscape architects find career opportunities in the public and private sectors; in government organisations at federal, state and municipal level; and in the offices of landscape architects, architects, planners, urban designers and engineers throughout Australia. From urban design projects (plazas and pedestrian precincts) to working with large open spaces (parks and nature reserves), the parameters of projects are broad. Graduates may also become involved in smaller projects such as private gardens, historic estates and productive landscapes.

Student profiles

Michaela Prescott

Landscape architecture at RMIT offers a global experience. Throughout the program I had multiple opportunities to engage with design projects and work in Melbourne, rural Victoria, Holland, China, and even worked from Australia on projects in Brazil and Germany.

In 2010 I collaborated with two exchange students from France in the student design competition for the Hamburg International Garden Show to be hosted in 2013. Our design was selected as a finalist and is to be constructed for the six month festival.

The program at RMIT is led by supportive and motivating staff that encourages its students to develop their own unique design methodology, that is contextualised within the landscape architectural discourse, as well as fostering an environment that offers social activities that facilitate access to the local industry.

International opportunities

The landscape program offers a huge range of international exchanges, study tour and internship opportunities. In 2010, students went to Tokyo, Vietnam, China and the US.

In 2010, student work completed in design studios was exhibited at the European Biennial of Landscape Architecture held in Barcelona. This exciting international event showcased 588 projects from landscape architecture and architecture schools from around the world.

There is also an annual internship offered to selected students at the Karres en Brands office in the Netherlands. Karres en Brands were the appointed landscape architects for Federation Square.

Working with industry

Each semester, practising professional designers present studios or specialisations which engage directly with contemporary design projects and/or issues.
