RMIT fashion has a reputation as the most renowned fashion design degree in Australia and one of the hardest to get into. When I moved to Melbourne from Sydney I met a number of people who had completed the degree and were doing some really amazing work which inspired me to look into it further. I have always wanted to work in this field and felt there was no other degree in Australia that compared to this one.
Winning the Spotlight prize at the Melbourne Spring Fashion Week has provided me with an incredible opportunity and it is an amazing honour to receive it. I am looking to do my internship with Costume National in Milan. I think the fact that a prize such as it exists is fantastic as it not only offers exposure and experience but facilitates the continuity of learning post uni which is really important.

I chose RMIT University as it is the leader in fashion education and equips students with the capacity for both conceptual and analytical design thinking. The program encourages student to think creatively and has helped me develop a successful design process for which I can express my ideas effectively. Fashion at RMIT is designed to push students to explore innovative design and I have consequently been able to produce a standard of work which exceeds any expectations I had.
Winning first place in the RMIT Student Floral Fashion Design Competition at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show has been my most rewarding achievement thus far in my studies. The flower show presented a fantastic and unique opportunity for us to explore the brief of ‘Topographic Exuberance’ with complete creative freedom, resulting in an astounding body of work.
Students in the program can apply to do an exchange at a university overseas. Students are currently on exchange in London, New York, Toronto, Hong Kong and Amsterdam.
Since its inception RMIT fashion design graduates have been the recipients of the major prize awarded by the Australians in New York Fashion Foundation, providing the winner with a funded 12-month internship in New York with high-profile fashion labels including Calvin Klein and Narcisco Rodriguez.
There are opportunities to partake in an internship that supports your own design focus during the fourth year of the degree. Internships of this nature may be with companies based in Australia or overseas and can vary in duration, depending on your individual needs and circumstances.
In previous years we have had students take internships at Marc Jacobs and Anna Sui in New York, Bless and Martin Grant in Paris and Vivienne Westwood and Paul Smith in the UK, to name a few. In Australia students have interned with a broad range of companies and labels including Country Road, Romance Was Born, Akira, Toni Maticevski, Collette Dinnigan and Nobody Jeans.
