Designing a classic valentine

Over chocolates and flowers? A new exhibition celebrating the iconic work of industrial designers for Olivetti – and featuring the 1969 classic red “valentine” typewriter – offers design-loving Melburnians an alternative to the Valentine’s Day cliches.

my valentine (14 – 24 February) is curated by RMIT University Industrial Design lecturer Ian Wong and presented by the Design Institute of Australia Design Gallery.

One of the star exhibits – the “valentine” typewriter designed by Ettore Sottsass and Perry King in 1969 – is featured in Design Museum collections across the world, including the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

The exhibition also includes designs from Mario Bellini, Marcello Nizzoli and Aldo Magnielli from Mr Wong’s personal collection of Olivetti classics.

A doctoral researcher in RMIT’s School of Architecture and Design, Mr Wong said the exhibition included beautiful and iconic 20th century products rarely seen on public display in Melbourne.

my valentine is about passionate designers, designing with the heart – the Italians have it in their blood,” he said.
