Understanding children’s challenging behaviour

RMIT University Hamilton will host a two-hour evening workshop for parents, aimed at helping them understand their children’s challenging and confrontational behaviour.

Especially suited to parents of children aged two to eight, the workshop offers theories and practical strategies to link emotional coaching with effective discipline.

Workshop presenter Lydia Bustin, of Early Childhood Matters, will use leading US psychologist Dr John Gottman's theory of how parents and caregivers can use techniques to enhance a child’s emotional intelligence.

Parents will learn the key elements of emotional intelligence, how emotion coaching enhances children’s development, achievements and relationships, how different parenting styles can enrich or inhibit children’s growth, and how to implement the five steps of emotion coaching effectively with young children.

Marilyn Lyons, RMIT Hamilton Learning Support Coordinator, said: “The workshop will explore positive discipline strategies, such as natural and logical consequences, effective interactions and communication strategies, ‘I’ statements and more.

“The workshop will leave parents with a better understanding of how to help their children learn to behave appropriately and understand and express emotions at the same time.”

Ms Bustin has worked in the Children’s Services profession for more than 12 years as an early childhood teacher, director and TAFE teacher.

Her qualifications include a Diploma of Children’s Services, a Bachelor

Degree in Early Childhood Education and she is currently completing a Masters in Education.

The workshop will take place from 7.30pm to 9.30pm on 19 August at RMIT University Hamilton and costs $30 per parent or $40 per couple.
